Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
Phil 2:14–16
This quote from Philippians says really nicely two things that I’d like to have in my first blog post:
- With Pastor Montgomery, I’d like to dedicate this blog to the glory of God and to the good of his people. A lot of blogs thrive because they’re edgy or cool. While I hope our posts will be interesting, I want first of all to “hold fast the word of life” and to help God’s people “shine as lights in this world.” As God gives me strength, I do hope with this blog to proclaim on the rooftops the glory of Christ (Matt 10:27) and encourage his people.
- We’re so privileged to serve as pastors a church which is already shining brightly in this sin-darkened world. It’s interesting that Paul here alludes to Dan 12:3: “And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” The context of Daniel 12 is the persecution and suffering of God’s people. Notwithstanding the persecution, the people are still shining and turning others to righteousness. In the same way, the Philippians will shine by their lack of grumbling and their joy. And in the same way, the people of Covenant Presbyterian Church will shine. We are the fulfillment of Daniel 12:3; through the grace of Jesus Christ, we are made to shine in this present evil age.
We’re starting this blog to give us another avenue to encourage the saints at Covenant (and anyone else!). Here are some things I’m thinking of writing about:
- Insights from the Scriptures as I come across them.
- Encouraging words from books I’m reading.
- Short, pastoral words of encouragement with whatever is happening (especially, with the virus).
Pastor Montgomery and I hope to post periodically (every couple days?). Our posts will automatically appear on the Church Facebook Page.
Soli Deo Gloria!
