Just this weekend I finished reading this little book – 75 pages total in the new reprint from Banner of Truth (pictured above). The title is somewhat unfortunate, because very much of what Ryle has to say is applicable not just to young men, but also to young women.
The topics covered are not just theological, but intensely practical. Ryle talks about the tenacity of habits, and how we ought therefore never to delay repentance or tolerate sin. He encourages thoughtfulness about life, and reflects on why people really reject the Bible (spoiler alert: it isn’t because it cannot be understood). He discusses lifestyle choices: location, vocation, and especially friends – “Choose friends… whom you would like to have near you on your death-bed,” (53). He gives very pointed, practical advise on how to maintain a living faith amidst the noise of life. Finally, he ends with a stirring call to young people to find something worth living for – not living for pleasures or trifles, but to do good in the world.
This book would be a great mini-study for youth groups or parents with their older kids. It would make an excellent graduation gift. I daresay even many adults who are not so young any more might profit much from it.
